D.C. teachers mull strategies for boosting literacy
Teachers in Washington, D.C., are in their second year of implementing the Common Core State Standards in literacy. Dowan McNair-Lee, an eighth-grade English/language arts teacher, said key trouble spots have been determining the main ideas and citing evidence from text. In some cases, with the help of instructional coaches, teachers have devised ways to help struggling students, such as having them tackle texts in small portions and asking them to focus on different portions of the material.
