Read alouds are invaluable for all students:} Here is great article on the benefits of reading aloud to middle school students. Enjoy - courtesy of ASCD SmartBrief.

Why teachers should read aloud to middle-school students
Reading aloud to older students who can comfortably read to themselves can have a variety of benefits, experts suggest. Educator and author Jessica Lahey reads aloud the works of Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, allowing her seventh- and eighth-grade students to get "carried away" with the stories as she changes her voice for each character. "Research indicates that motivation, interest, and engagement are often enhanced when teachers read aloud to middle school students," researchers Lettie Albright and Mary Ariail write in a study.
