Common Core has increased the benchmarks for all of the grade levels in reading. Some educators feel younger students can not meet the challenge. Here is a blog post that makes suggestions for younger students that argues deep thinking is possible for all students - given learning opportunities. 5 tips for teaching students to analyze what they read
Even students who are still learning how to read can be taught active reading skills, writes literacy specialist Rebecca Alber. In this blog post, Alber offers five ideas, including asking students to make predictions about a passage based on its structure, to help students of any age to develop skills to analyze what they read. "Children, regardless if they are in the stage of reading to learn or learning to read, need structured opportunities to engage with text in deep and meaningful ways," Alber writes.
