Family Literacy Nights in Jay!

Jay held their first Family Literacy Evening on March 3rd involving grades K-12.  Karina Escajeda, coordinator, has planned a series of 4  Family Literacy Writing Nights to be held on the first Wednesday of March,  April,  May, and June at the Jay Middle School, from 6-8 PM.  Dinner and crafting materials are provided, along with writing instruction for the 4 projects.  K-12, parents and siblings are invited.

Parents responded favorably to the read aloud book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, to accompany the "My Name" theme, with illustrations projected onto the screen.

There were about 50 participants, and more are  expected next time-- everyone said they would be back-- and possibly with another friend and their family!

Our first poem was "My Name", and the second is "I Am".

The feedback on the parent night evaluation surveys was 100% positive, with parents responding favorably to the theme-based read-aloud book, the ability for all participants to engage at various levels of literacy, and the fun family nature of the event.

The project is funded by Title 1 funds as part of the district wide CIPS plan.
