Mt. Blue High School Literacy Team

Yesterday we had our first meeting of EDU 591 consisting of Mt. Blue teachers. This group went through the first year of training offered through UMF and WMEC. Year one is EDU 590, Advanced Strategies and Applied Research for Content Literacy Mentors - Part I, which focuses on comprehension strategies in the content area. This year, we focus on coaching and forming a literacy team.

This model trains classroom teachers to coach other teachers - leaving the work to be done in the hands of the experts, the classroom teachers. It is tremendously successful and enables schools to become independent over a period of 2-3 years, depending on the size of the faculty.

One of the texts we are using is Building Teachers' Capacity for Success A Collaborative Approach for Coaches and School Teachers by Hall and Simeral. As we read and reflected, one key idea kept surfacing: coaches are servant leaders - servants to the good of all - no ego here.

It reminded me of a quote on team I have often used:

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.
The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives.
It is a fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

Although there is nothing common about this group (they are great) this quote certainly does describe their commitment to the students in the school as well as their achievements so far!!
